The Bambino Finally Retires

October 27, 2004 at 11:10 PM

Even though I’m not much of a baseball fan anymore (due to the player’s strike, and the fact that Canadian teams have done nothing since the early ‘90’s), I couldn’t help but get excited for the Boston Red Sox throughout this fall’s MLB playoffs. I mean, it’s an amazing story, starting with the series between the Sox and the Yankees: the curse of the Bambino, the 86 year drought, and the Red Sox down 3–0 and coming back to win the series. After that incredible feat, no one was absolutely sure if the Red Sox were going to in fact break the curse because the were facing the St. Louis Cardinals, who won 105 regular season games. For a team that won that many games during the regular season, the Cards just seemed to fall apart in the presence of the Red Sox. It was especially noticeable in the game on Tuesday evening. One event from that game that comes to mind was the little run-down that St. Louis pitcher Jeff Suppan got himself into.

I could ramble on more about the games, the series, but I guess the point of all of this is to say congratulations to the Red Sox. It took 86 years, a curse, and a massive error by Bill Buckner in game 6 of the ‘86 World Series to get here, but they finally broke the curse of the Bambino.

NHL Locks Out Players

NHL Locks Out Players

Well, what every hockey fan has feared has come to pass. Gary Bettman announced this afternoon that the NHL has locked out its players until an agreement can be reached between the NHL and the NHLPA regarding the economic issues that have been on the table for the last few months.

It’s really sad to see the sport come to this point. Personally, after the ‘94-‘95 lockout, I’d hoped that we wouldn’t have to see this again for a long while. If the owners and the NHL had used a little foresight back when the talks were going on in ‘94-‘95, they wouldn’t be in this mess right now. I do agree that NHL players make a scandalous amount of money, more than any person is worth really, but I also feel that the owners are being a little greedy as well.

It doesn’t look like we’re going to be seeing a quick end to this dispute either, both sides seem to be behaving very childishly over the issues at hand and can’t seem to even sit down and discuss. It’s absolutely ridiculous, maybe both sides need to lose a little bit of money because of this lockout and they’ll finally both see that they weren’t in that bad of a situation after all. That’s just my two cents…

Canada VS Finland

September 14, 2004 at 06:09 PM

Canada VS Finland (2 -- 1)

Canada Wins 3 – 2!

Thank goodness our cable got hooked up today. This could be the last time in quite a while we see hockey like this here in North America as it looks like the NHL is set to lock out the players tomorrow sometime.

The game has been extremely back and forth after the first period with the score tied 1 – 1. I’m really hoping to see Brad Richards (Hometown PEI boy!) put in a good performance, and hopefully we’ll see Canada pull out a gold medal. The World Cup of Hockey is always an excellent tournament, I just wish I had been able to catch a few more of the games as I may go into hockey withdrawal this winter if indeed this lockout goes through.

The NHL lockout is a whole other matter, which I may touch on in a few days once a decision is reached.

Update #1: Scott Neidermayer has just scored for Canada to make the score 2 – 1 for Canada.
Update #2: Finland scored a late second period goal to make the score 2 – 2.
Update #3: Shane Doan scored a goal early in the third for Canada to make the score 3 – 2 for Canada.
Update #4: Final score 3 – 2 for Canada. Canada is once again World Hockey Champions! Vincent Lecavalier was named tournament MVP.
