Tragedy

March 07, 2005 at 09:03 AM

Just a quick post wishing my most sincere condolences to those that have been affected by the tragedy in Mayerthorpe, Alberta last week.

For those unaware of the situation, four RCMP officers were shot and killed while investigating a stolen car parts and small marijuana grow operation last Thursday in the small community of Mayerthorpe, about 200 km north west of Edmonton.

"Dimebag" Darrell Abbott 1966 - 2004

December 09, 2004 at 10:12 AM

As I awoke to The Bear this morning, I heard the report that last night at an Ohio nightclub, a crazed fan shot and killed “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott.

Any of you who are remotely into heavy metal music no doubt know who Dimebag Darrell is. But, for those who don’t, Dimebag was the lead guitarist for the now parted Pantera, a pioneer in the hardcore metal scene. Since the breakup of Pantera, Dimebag and his brother Vinnie Paul (also formerly of Pantera) had been playing in a band called Damageplan.

Last night in front of a crowd of 200, a man climbed onstage during Damageplan’s first song of the night, made a comment about the breakup of Pantera and proceeded to pump round after round into Dimebag’s body. Dimebag was among the 5 deceased at as a result of the incident.

Firefox 1.0

Firefox 1.0

Firefox 1.0 has arrived. After a beta period that has seemed almost endless, the web browser of everyone’s dreams is finally here. I’m currently trying to grab myself a copy but it seems that The Mozilla Foundation, GetFirefox.com, and SpreadFirefox.com are getting completely hammered. This has definitely been my favorite piece of software to watch grow. The marketing effort that has been launched by everyone involved with SpreadFirefox.com has just been amazing. I know of quite a few people that before that site launched had absolutely no interest in web standards, let alone any browser other than Internet Explorer, and now as I read emails and speak to friends on the phone, many of them ask me if I’ve heard of this Firefox web browser.

Along with the launch of Firefox today, be on the lookout for Firefox launch parties in your area. I don’t believe that there is one in Edmonton yet, but if one happens to pop up, I’ll definitely be attending.

Google has also jumped on board the Firefox movement amidst rumours that a rebranded Google version of Firefox might be on the horizon. The default start page for Firefox 1.0 is actually a Google search page.

So to all of you that haven’t given this fabulous web browser a shot yet, I’d definitely suggest that everyone make a stop at one of the sites that I mention below and grab up a copy.

Those of you interested in using an optimized build of Firefox should have a look at these links:

Judgement Day

November 02, 2004 at 11:11 AM

Today’s United States Presidential Election is not only important for those in the United States, but the world at large. The more that conflicts, such as the one in Iraq, are allowed to flair up and drag on for months, even years, the closer we are to a world war; a world war, which could mean great devistation throughout the world.

Personally, being Canadian, I’m can’t wait for the election to be over, because I’m tired of the mudslinging, all the propoganda, Michael Moore, and all the other lovely stuff that comes along during an election year.

Nonetheless, I’m still watching my television extremely close today (I’ve gone as far as to set up a TV here in my office as I work, just so I won’t miss anything). I’m frightened to see what the outcome of the election will be. Even though I’m rooting for Kerry, I have a strong feeling that Dubya will once again be elected for another mandate. One thing I really hope for is that this time, the democratic process will work, unlike the Florida fiasco during the 2000 election.

I also hope that voter’s (especially those in Ohio) will all get out and exercise their vote. I’m extremely appalled that in Ohio, party’s are allowed to have representatives there for whatever reason. I feel it’s completely wrong that people need to be subjected to last minute campaigning (read: intimidation) while they wait to cast their vote. Seems to me like this is a major regression in the democratic process for the United States.

So for any or all of you that are American that read my blog and are of voting age, please, please, go out and vote! The rest of us are counting on you!

Update: Here’s a few links that I found over at urlgreyhot for tracking the proceedings of todays events:
